Making a Difference in the Lives of 500 Haitian Children

Aug 31, 2017

Christeen Moburg, director, Stakeholder Engagement, Corporate Affairs, joined Family Medicine Cares International (FMCI) to provide much-needed health care services to the people of Haiti – working alongside in-country partner Heart to Heart International (HHI).

The 26-member Delegation was grouped into three distinct teams focused on patient care, medical education and service to children and youth. Christeen was part of the Service Team, which consisted of seven non-medical volunteers and one staff member who focused on the needs of nearly 500 children and youth. The team spent considerable time at two schools in the Leogane/Fondwa region and an orphanage in Leogane.

“During our time in the Leogane/Fondwa region, we were able to paint the interior and exterior of the two schools and assist with the construction of a cafeteria for the orphanage,” said Christeen. “The team connected with the children at all of the facilities and assisted the Patient Care team to organize children for the well-child visits at the Place l’Or school.”

This is Christeen’s third trip to Haiti with FMCI and feels it is a great way to give back by helping to try to address some of the unmet needs of the Haitian children. Christeen hopes to return to Haiti in 2018.

FMCI is dedicated to making a positive impact on family medicine worldwide. One important way FMCI achieves its mission is by delivering patient care and medical resources for people in need around the world, with an initial focus on impoverished Haiti.
