Senior Vice President and General Counsel
Linda Friedman is senior vice president and general counsel for Astellas in the Americas. In this role, she oversees legal operations, including risk management, information management, intellectual property, compliance and internal audit, in the Americas region by providing strategic and tactical legal advice to the CEO, board of directors, senior management, global colleagues and business clients, in a manner which furthers the company’s strategic objectives, while at the same time meets the company’s legal and compliance obligations. Friedman is a member of the Astellas US Management Committee. Friedman is also the executive sponsor of Astellas' LGBTQ employee resource group, known as TAO (Together As One).
Friedman joined Fujisawa – merged with Yamanouchi in 2005 to create Astellas – in 1993 as a corporate attorney, and has since held positions of increasing responsibility. In 1998, Friedman was named senior corporate counsel and vice president, responsible for management, oversight of the legal function in the U.S.
Prior to joining Fujisawa, Friedman was chief corporate counsel at Chicago-based insurance agency, Associated Agencies, Inc., where she established a legal department with a primary focus on mergers and acquisitions. Previously, Friedman served as a corporate attorney at Lyphomed, Inc., later acquired by Fujisawa.
Friedman graduated Magna Cum Laude and Bronze Tablet from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana with a Bachelor of Science in social work. She earned her law degree from Northwestern University School of Law.
Friedman currently serves as a chairperson on the board of directors of Illinois Biotechnology Industry Organization (iBIO), an organization that supports educational and entrepreneurial efforts in the life sciences, as well as a member of the iBIO Executive Committee. Friedman is also a member of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) Law Section and former chair of the Law Section Executive Committee, Healthcare Business Women’s Association (HBA), American Bar Association and Association of Corporate Counsel. Friedman will be joining Youth Build Lake County (YBLC) as a board member in December 2015. YBLC is a nonprofit organization providing education and vocational skills to at risk youth. She has also served on other local community not-for profit boards including A Safe Place and YWCA Lake County.
